Becoming Successful in Fantasy Hockey

Fantasy hockey is a very popular online game for fans and enthusiasts of the sport. This type of game tests the knowledge of the fans about the players they prefer, using the player’s performance to their advantage or even knowing the skill on having an educated prediction of the game. Although fantasy sports are basically a numbers game, it has become an industry in itself as fans from around the world come together in different websites. There are even online players of the game even though they are not located in areas where hockey is popular. Since it’s a game of numbers, all they need is an internet connection and dedication to the sport to be able to play the game.

The NHL (National Hockey League)

Although there are many hockey leagues around the world, none of those leagues have greater influence in fantasy sports compared to NHL. Almost every fantasy hockey game in different websites use NHL as the basis of scoring. If you visit these websites that host these fantasy leagues for hockey, most of them are closed for new sign-ups in the middle of the season of NHL. When play-off starts, a new game is opened but they are more likely limited to head-to-head games.

But even though it is only limited to NHL, the options in winning in this game is still unlimited. With 30 teams in the league, player selection is easy as long as the number of players in a given tournament are only limited to less than 20.

Forms of Tournament in Fantasy Hockey

There are many forms of hockey but there are only a few forms of fantasy hockey that are used. These forms of tournaments have different rules and points system which means success in one tournament might not guarantee success in other tournaments.

Rotisserie Format

The most popular type of fantasy game in any sport, rotisserie format is used so that more than two players can join the game. In this type of game, the player with the highest statistics on a specific category will have the highest score. The 2nd highest score will be given to the 2nd place and so forth. For example, there are 12 members of the tournament and they use five categories. The winner of each category will receive 12 points and the lowest scoring player will receive only one point.

Head to Head Format

In this format, two players use the stats to defeat each other. Each category on the stats is considered one game. They could use as many categories as they want but the player with the most winning categories, wins. The beauty of this game is that it could be done without even the use of the internet except in gathering data. As the head to head match, the categories are often based on one game, set of games or a series. It’s basically a very short game with which the winner could be immediately determined.

Points Format

In this format, players of the game use a relatively complicated formula to determine the winner. Instead of determining the winner by knowing how he or she got the highest score in a category, players use multipliers. This is used to indicate that some aspects of the game are more important than others. For example, in NHL, most fantasy sports that offer points-format offers a high multiplier to scores and number of assists. Faceoffs, Shots on Goal, Power Play Minutes all receive lower multipliers.

But these formats can be interwoven for a more interesting fantasy game. For example, head to head game could use points or rotisserie format when playing the game. The rotisserie format could also use points to determine the overall winner of the tournament.

Many Numbers, Same Formats

At first glance, fantasy hockey could be deemed complicated since there are just many rules a person has to deal with. This is understandable since there are many stats with NHL and these are extensively used in different websites.

But even with the categories and rules, understanding fantasy hockey is simple as soon as you understand the scoring format. Understanding of points, head-to-head and rotisserie format could increase your chances of starting the game soon. Other rules and restrictions are usually based on how to draft, the rules on injured players and customization of games.

The complication ceases to exist as soon as you understand the scoring system. In fact, the scoring system is not only limited to a single website. These scoring formats are also used in different websites which makes it a lot easier for players to join as many websites as they can.

On Cheating

Cheating is always a no-no in any game and fantasy hockey is never an exception. Unfortunately, there are persons that resort to cheating just to succeed in this game. This usually happens in group games (rotisserie and points). In these formats, trading is possible because injuries in players should not stop the players in the fantasy tournament to enjoy the game. But others have more than 1 team in a single tournament which means they can trade the weaker players to one team. They can draft more players and use them at will.

Fortunately, websites are implementing security measures to implement fair play in the fantasy league. They often limit a player to only have one team to join and trading and waivers are highly limited.

Enjoying the Game

Fantasy hockey is a very fun game that should be enjoyed in any means possible. Most of the free fantasy hockey games offer administrative capabilities. The administrator is practically the commissioner – the administrator could set the categories used in the tournament or even set the multipliers in points format. This will really increase the fun in fantasy hockey as group of friends could compete not only on who won the game but on the accomplishments of their favorite players. At first, fantasy hockey could be challenging especially on understanding the rules and scoring. But they can be learned while playing the game which can easily increase the fun in learning.
