This would have been a good acquisition when Shaq was 10 years younger, but he suffers from to many injuries, can't play a full season, fluctuates with his obesity problem and still can't make a free throw. Bust trade this season.
The Cavs have a legit shot of making it out of the East, but I have to think that either a healthy Boston team or Orlando can still beat them. The Cavs never seem to do well with the Magic, and I think the Hedo/Carter swap will be a good thing for the Magic. I would have to give the edge to Boston if they can stay healthy, and Garnett comes back to his pre-injury days.
In the West, I don't think that the Lakers are a breeze to make it to the Finals. I really like what San Antonio has done in the off-season, and should be able to compete with the Lakers.
Outside of the teams mentioned (Cavs, Celtics, Magic, Spurs, and Lakers), I can't see anyone else making it to the finals this year.
These were some great comments regarding the NBA and I like your top 5. What would be your finals prediction? I go with Cavs / Lakers. Don't think Howard can stick with a big dominate player like Shaq. I also don't believe the Celtics will be healthy along with the Spurs.
I know I always defend Detroit sports and give them plugs when I can, but I just can't see how they are better than the Celtics, Cavs, and Magic. We made a great addition with Ben Gordon, but he plays the same position as Rip Hamilton. We desperately need someone up front, but then let McDyess and Wallace go. We will be lucky to make it as a 7 or 8 seed in the playoffs this year.
My prediction: Celtics vs. Lakers with the Celtics winning in 6.
How can you think the Celtics can compete with the Cavs or the Magic even when healthy? Youth, strength and all around better players will prevail and this precisely sums up the Cavs and the Lakers. As for Detroit finishing 7 or 8, what other 5 teams are better than them out of the East? Turnin your back on Detroit???
First off, Dwight has never played well against Rasheed Wallace...and now that him and KG will be playing, you will see how tough it is for Dwight. Boston has a young PG in Rondo, and verteran experience. They could start Rondo, Allen, Pierce, KG, and Wallace. That is a hell of a starting five that is much more rounded than the Cavs or the Magic.
As for the other teams in the east that have the potential of getting ahead of the Pistons:
Hawks
Heat
Bulls
Sixers
I think Detroit is as good or better than these teams, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they finish ahead of us in the regular season.
I like how you state that they have "the potential of getting ahead", that's well stated. I can't see those teams being ahead of the Pistons, but that is why they play the games.

The Cavs will be the favorite out of the East. Lebron will have a big year.
