Grades for the Top 10 2009 NFL Draft Picks

Separating the “Good” from “Maybe” in NFL Top 10 Draft Picks

The first day of NFL draft has just ended and Matthew Stafford from Georgia is officially the top draft of 2009. There’s little surprise on team selection but that doesn’t mean your fantasy would have an improved results if you add one of the top 10 in your selection for the upcoming season.

The following is the run down of the top 10 and if their respective grade for your fantasy league. Similar to the grades we had when attending school, the system goes from A+ to Fail. Now it is time for the grades.

Matthew Stafford (Lions)

Matthew Stafford

Undoubtedly one of the best quarterback in this year’s draft and the Detroit Lions didn’t think twice on getting good help. His expertise in passing is already established – which is basically the skill the Lions need this year. He’s already locked with a big contract so the financial motivation is there.

Fantasy Grade: A

Jason Smith (Rams)

Jason Smith

The Rams drafted Smith for two reasons: they need a good OT and he’s the best out there right now. There’s a hole that will be easily filled by Jason Smith. Get him as he’ll put up great numbers for his team.

Fantasy Grade: A-

Tyson Jackson (Chiefs)

Tyson Jackson

An immediate impact is expected from Jackson as he provides the much needed defense for the Chiefs. He is well known for defense against runs.

Fantasy Grade: B+

Aaron Curry (Seahawks)

Aaron is undoubtedly a great athlete. A linebacker that could really help the team from day one, he could fill the needed defense that has been lacking from the Falcons.

Fantasy Grade: A

Mark Sanchez (Jets)

Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez has a great opportunity here. With Brett Favre (finally) retiring, he comes in as a fresh face for the Jets. But the pressure to perform could take its toll. After all, he’ll be playing for the New York Jets after Brett Favre who also came in with great expectations.

Fantasy Grade: A-

Andre Smith (Broncos)

The kid’s got talent but his latest ratings have decreased because of his character. Hopefully, being a professional football player will help him instead of bringing down his character.

Fantasy Grade: B

Darrius Heyward-Bey (Raiders)

This athlete has the speed needed by a wide receiver. But speed is not everything. He doesn’t have the hands (yet) to deal with the challenges of the NFL.

Fantasy Grade: FAIL

Eugene Moore (Jaguars)

The Jaguars will undoubtedly have a great time with Moore as he is consistently improving each time he goes out to prove what he can do.

Fantasy Grade: B+

B.J. Raji (Packers)

Another defensive tackle for Green Bay is just what they need. With their defense providing an average performance, the presence of Raji should provide the boost they need.

Fantasy Grade: B

Michael Crabtree (49ers)

Expect him to play for the 49ers instantly as their starting WR. But just like Andre Smith, he has to smoothen out his character to learn more about the league and move forward.
