The Buffalo Bills is in for a great year this season. Although they’re usually referred to as “the other New York football team” for the past few seasons, the team still commands great fan following. Although the Bills are not as popular as the Jets and Giants, they can still put up great performances. Unfortunately, the team’s output is not as strong as the Jets or would even have some controversies (Jets and Favre, Giants and Superbowl), so they are always left behind in the news.
But that perception is about to change this season as the Bills have acquired a great talent on the court and a great PR for the team off it – Terry Owens. One of the best in the league in what he does, Terry Owens have been part of great teams only to be met with controversy. His stint with the Cowboys can be considered as a whirlwind relationship as the other Cowboy constantly causes off-court news: Tony Romo. Owens was released March 4, 2009 and Bills immediately signed him after a few days.

The Buffalo Bills will certainly enjoy the presence of Owens. Aside from his off-court antics which will drew more attention to the team, his role as a wide receiver will certainly provide better options for Trent Edwards. Last year, Buffalo was 23rd in points per game simply because Edwards can’t easily move the ball. Owens will even have help from another wide receiver Lee Evans who have been with the team for four seasons. His familiarity with Edwards should offer great option for the quarterback along with Owens.
This situation will naturally have a domino effect on the rushers and even of the defense. The defense could likely focus on covering their quarterback rather than pushing to make way for rushes. The wide receivers will also stretch the opposing team’s defense significantly which could offer opportunities for rushing.
The bad news for Bills is that their wide receivers will receive plenty of attention this season. The defense of most teams they will face in the upcoming season will be using 3-4 defensive form. The extra line backer could be covering the wide receivers and might cover the cross pass which will most likely happen with Owens. Bills on the other hand is using 4-3 defense which is a little bit challenging as this is a new formation to accommodate Owens and the possibility of frequently using wide receivers in the game.
No one really knows what will happen to the Bills defense and its strategy. However, it will be greatly tested on their first game as the Bills will be facing New England Patriots – a team known for their 3-4 defensive formation.
The chances of Bills to be a tough competitor for the playoffs are strong. Of course, everything does not rest on Owens’ performance but his presence has been a significant boost for the Bills. If they can figure out how to deal with the 3-4 defensive formation, they should be able to post more wins.
