The NFL is already nearing the end of the bye weeks which means one thing: the NBA season is about to start. The 82 games will officially start at the end October and everyone is very excited to know how Lakers can defend their title. But before that - the "tune-up games" or the preseason where you'll see teams play the game without caring too much on what they can do. Some use it to size up the enemy while others use it to break-in their rookies so that they can adjust well when the regular season starts.

Along with the preseason games, fantasy players are now busy collecting data about team changes, rookies or almost anything that can affect the league. Also common in the preseason is the mock draft for rotisserie format. Fantasy players try their best to draft the best players for their team against other fantasy players who have the same goal. But the mock draft in most fantasy leagues are not just a "draft 'n go" format. The mock draft is actually a preview on what's going to happen on the actual draft since the same opponents will be on the actual day of the draft.
In this setting, two possible scenarios will happen. The first scenario is that they will actually show their preference on the mock draft. They will show this as a warning that they will get their preferred players when they are given the chance. The second possibility is they are simply giving random picks so that they can catch everyone off guard. But personal experience would suggest that fantasy players will actually show their true preferences even in mock draft. Besides, everyone already have a list of players they would draft in case their first choice was selected.
There are some fantasy players who do not like to go through mock draft. The main reason is that they don't want to give away their secrets or their preferred players. This argument actually has a point since mock draft will have a way of forcing you to show your true preferences. But mock drafts are perfect for those who are unsure of their list (which is almost everyone). Through mock draft, fantasy players will get fresh ideas on the hottest players in the league or those who might have an unexpected impact. A second opinion is not necessarily a bad thing.
Last but not the least; mock drafts in the NBA are as valuable in mock drafts for NFL. There are just too many players to be considered for many positions. NBA may not have as many players compared to a complete NFL team but it's going to be a lot of work just to get a decent list. Add to this factor the tense fantasy draft wherein fantasy players are given limited time to adjust their roster. This problem could be prevented when fantasy players participate in mock draft where they trade and learn new ideas on how to draft and who to draft for the upcoming season.
